Catholics often place a lot of importance in the marriage of a couple. It is considered as one of the seven sacraments of the Church that should be taken seriously as they represent God’s love to His people. For this reason, most Catholics prefer holding their wedding ceremonies in the church or cathedral as is the tradition. However, in recent times many Catholic couples have looked for other ways of conducting their weddings elsewhere and giving them a different touch while maintaining the significance and image of a traditional Catholic wedding.

Wedding preparations usually start by proposal and engagement, after which the priest should be informed of your intention to marry. He will then organize for you to be enrolled in the Pre-Cana, a special marriage counseling season whose aim is to prepare the couple spiritually, socially and emotionally for matrimony. Traditionally, any partner that is not baptized can get the same service during this session. But recently this has not been followed to the letter and it has become a matter of personal will.

After the Pre-Cana, the couple can then allow themselves enough time to prepare for their big day. The venue of the wedding can be outside the church, probably a place where other Catholic faithful guests can feel comfortable.

The decorations may also take a different route according to the couple’s sense of style. Choice of colors, flowers and other beauty paraphernalia doesn’t have to follow the traditional ways. Innovations have been brought up to spice up the monotonous traditional wedding preparation elements. One is free to experiment on various ideas as long as they do not go against the Catholic spiritual teachings.

Elements of style, culture and heritage have influenced different people’s decisions on how to plan and conduct their weddings. People are now fusing their cultural practices into the wedding routines. This helps in identifying one’s background and customs. It also adds glamour to the ceremony by introducing the beauty of cultural diversity.

The wedding attire has not been speared either. The bride’s gown now includes some elegant cultural decorations, prints and even a different general design of the gown altogether. This has given rise to customized gowns which give the brides an edge above the normal out-of-shop designs. The suits also exude contemporary allure through different alterations and ornamentation.

The bridal party and the groom’s party can also introduce the aspect of culture into the scene by spotting ethnic ornaments and other decorations which help in adding color and style to the ceremony. The whole family can also where there cultural wedding costumes instead of the normal business suits and other official dressing.

Wedding songs have also been influenced by customary practices. The normal hymns sung in the church in English can be done in Spanish, French or any other ethnic language. Some couples have even requested for a full mass in which the body and blood of Christ are given to the congregation. One can even choose to have the whole mass done in local language or even Latin. All this serve to add the beauty of language to the wonderful event.

Manage my nerves

This was the first step I took to lose weight for my wedding.

Stop lazy eating!

Lazy eating is the second worst thing. I started to prepare my own meals - did not buy already prepared. This kept me away from chips, fast food, cookies and all the bad things on the way. Not being lazy to buy prepared food helped me a lot on my way to lose weight for my wedding - and this actually changed my daily habits, so it is easier now to maintain my current weight.

Add something 100% healthy

To lose weight for my wedding, I did change one of my daily meals to something very healthy. Your Making Your Guest List & Checking it Twice ~ But What Have You Forgetten?

Preparing for a wedding, large or small, is overwhelming! A way to combat that feeling is to break down the required tasks, divide the responsibilities and assign deadlines. Ok, all that is fine-but what have you forgotten?

A wedding is a public affair, and it's everyone's fear that somewhere, somehow, despite all the planning, arrangements, expense, and hard work, something will happen to make one or more of the principles appear foolish in public.

Let's look at a scenario for a moment. It's a beautiful day and a beautiful wedding. Everything is in place. The site of the ceremony has been decorated appropriately and beautifully, all major participants are playing their roles correctly and are properly dressed, the groom and his best man have arrived and are in place, and the wedding party are about to begin the walk down the aisle.

The music starts, and the bridal attendants proceed down the aisle. They're nervous, and when nervous, people tend to both rush and "herd." The attendants are following that instinct, and they're so close together that no one can get a separate picture of each one! The organist is trying to keep up with the fact that the attendants are in place far too soon, so she/he speeds up the music. The bride then starts to proceed down the aisle before the music has changed; the organist quickly switches the music, which now has the tempo of a rock opera. No one has been able to get photographs of the bridesmaids. The bride is beautifully dressed, but she's so close to the maid/matron of the honor or flower girl that no one can see or photograph her properly either-she's nervous too!

As the bride and her escort pass, you notice that her train, which is probably at least as beautiful as the rest of her gown if not more so, is twisted and to the side. Because in most ceremonies the bride and groom stand facing the officiant, you can see her twisted train all throughout the ceremony!

After the ceremony, the bride and groom proceed back down the aisle, followed by the attendants and the couple's parents. Because of the emotion of the moment, some of the members of the bridal party have cried during the service, and it now appears that most female members of the party, including the bride herself, has made themselves up to look like circus clowns because their mascara is running and their foundation is streaked! The guests are asking themselves if the bridal party looked that way at the start of the ceremony, because of course they couldn't see them very well-they were too close together.

There's a sudden downpour outside in the middle of the ceremony, and it doesn't let up. When the time comes for the bride, groom and wedding party to be transported to the reception everyone gets wet and soggy and arrives at the reception looking unhappy, uncomfortable, wrinkled, soaked, and with their hairdos in disarray. It's all recorded on those expensive once-in-a-lifetime wedding photographs and videotapes too!

So how can all this be prevented? First, if you don't have a professional wedding planner, you need an assistant! It should be a close friend or relative who is not supposed to be sitting in the reserved seats at the front, and so is available to help you manage the last minute necessary details. You should prepare a kit in advance of the ceremony that contains things like a needle and thread in black, white and the wedding colors, toothpaste and chalk to deal with any stains that might appear on the wedding dress, asprin and an extra pair of stockings in a neutral shade, a small bottle of water, tissues or handkerchiefs, etc.

Your assistant's first task is to hand out the tissues or handkerchiefs--almost every bridal party forgets them. She should hand these out just before the mothers and then the bridal party proceed down the aisle. The bride and bridal party can hold them under their bouquets so that they are not seen. If you hand them out any time before that, you'll find that at least one person--and more often a few people--will forget to bring theirs-and a wedding ceremony is no place to take chances! Tissues will serve the purpose, of course-but do you really want the bridal party photographed during the ceremony with tissues-perhaps shredded by a nervous owner? Men's handkerchiefs will do, and of course, pretty lace-trimmed handkerchiefs are even better-just make sure they're sizeable! You may be able to find reasonably priced lace handkerchiefs locally or online, or you can always buy men's linen handkerchiefs and hand-sew lace on them--it doesn't take that long to do.

Your helper's second task is to space your attendants as they go down the aisle. When the organist (who has used unrolling the aisle runner and the placement of the groomsmen as a cue) begins the processional music, your helper should stand to the side of the lined-up bridesmaids, using the door as a shield so that she will not be seen by your guests. While proper spacing is a matter of judgment, a good guideline is that the next bridesmaid should not proceed down the aisle until the bridesmaid in front of her is AT LEAST 1/2 way up the aisle in a medium-sized church or hall. If the church is the size of a cathedral (as in The Sound of Music), it could be 1/3 of the way. Remember-they can't start without you!

The maid/matron of honor should not start until the last bridesmaid is in place, and the flower girl and ring bearer should also not start down the aisle until the maid/matron of honor is in place, regardless of the size of the church. In other words, there should be a little more spacing between these two members of the bridal party.

The bride should wait until the first few bars of the music for the bride has been played. The organist is waiting for the placement or seating of the ring bearer and flower girl to switch music; do not rush her! Again remember: it won't start without you! Your helper is there to calm you and your escort down, wait for the music, make sure the bride is on the left,and slow you both down if necessary.

When the last bridal attendant or flower girl/ring bearer "step off" and are on their way down the aisle, your helper should slip behind the bride and her escort, again, taking care not to be seen. On the very first step that the bride and her escort take, the helper should pick up the train at least a foot but no more than two feet off the ground, and give it a "flip." This action is similar to smoothing out a sheet on a bed. The "flip" will ensure that the train will ride on a curtain of air and stay spread correctly as long as the bride keeps walking.

Next, how to handle the sudden downpour. As part of your preparations, the bride should obtain enough umbrellas (three is plenty) for the bridal couple and the bridal party. Some limousine services also carry umbrellas, but if so, they usually only have one, and you need to consider at least your bridesmaids as well. If you find that you have too many, the parents and relatives of the couple would appreciate them, too! While any color umbrella will do, white umbrellas would be lovely. Consider getting a large golf size umbrella for the bride and groom and folding umbrellas do nicely for your wedding party and parents. Your helper should have the umbrellas at the back of the hall or church near the door and be ready to hand them out after the ceremony.

Arrange to give your assistant the umbrellas and your emergency kit a day or two before the wedding, and make sure that she knows what her role will be. A good friend is priceless! Remember that she is doing you a favor. It would be a nice gesture--and one that will be remembered--to present her personally with a special and thoughtful gift at the reception, as well as your thanks. You can put the gift in a parent's car, or possibly the best man's car, in advance of your wedding day.

I just recently had a friend ask me how to handle the fact that her family was trying to emotionally sabotage her up-coming marriage. They didn't approve of her partner. This is an amazingly common issue. Most people have at some point faced parents being damagingly judgmental about a choice of partner. But what a disaster when this takes places around the time you're looking to say "I do"!

I've heard all sorts of variants on this theme. "I hate what I'm studying, but my parents say I should finish my degree." or "I work as an X, not because that's what I wanted, but because my family pushed me in that direction."

The truth is, families can be great supporters sometimes. They can guide us, shelter us, and nurture us when we're hurting. But - and it's a big but - families can also be very destructive if they aren't autonomy supporting, especially once the kids have grown up.

The process starts this way. As children, we learn to look to our parents and siblings to give us hints to where there may be danger. Remember when you were a terrified kid in a scary movie and your Dad put his arm around you and said everything'll be ok? Or, on the other hand, when you were doing something dangerous and didn't realise it? Your Mom swooped in and stopped you before disaster hit.

Basically, in times of stress or uncertainty you got used to looking to your parents for advice, AND THEY GOT USED TO GUIDING YOU and having the power to stop or encourage you.

Well, both parents and kids get confused in later life. Not only is it a huge step for a young adult to "take control of their lives" and go against family wisdom, be it with a choice of partners, career or lifestyle. But parents also have trouble. Because they're trying to prevent their kids from making what they see as a mistake, they can bully, become beligerent and come out with great little kernels like: "You're throwing your life away."

The key to dealing with reactions like this is twofold. The first aspect is to isolate yourself, if only for a few days. Go to someone's cottage. Take a road trip. Stay with a friend in another city.

And now, you want to do this without whoever's been pressuring you, like your parents or even an interfering friend and/or partner.

In this time, you need to square stuff with yourself. Why do you want to make a change? Are you sure of your choice? Are your motives the rights ones?
If the answers to all these questions are "Yes". Then you've got half your answer. You know in your heart what is right for you.

Why do I recommend this check-in with yourself?

Because, rebellious little teenagers that we are, even as adults, often we do things in "reaction" to those around us. For example, "You don't think I should be with this guy? Ok, I'm going to buy a ring." or "You don't think I should move just now? Well I'll call the realtor tommorrow morning!"

For this reason, it's very important to get straight in your head what decisions are yours and what you've done in reaction to other people's (overbearing) opinions.

In the case of a family sabotaging an up-coming marriage, I'd ask myself: "Why do I want to get married at a time when my family has little confidence. If these memories will last a lifetime, wouldn't I rather they be as perfect as possible? And if money is an issue, why not save for 6 months?"

Once you've got this straight, it's time to take on your family. Sit down the contrary members one by one and start with something like:

"I know you don't think what I'm doing is a good idea, but I'm an adult and I've made a choice. There's nothing you can do to change my mind. Actually, now, you're in the process of ruining our relationship by trying to undermine my autonomy and self-esteem. I value our relationship and so want us to straighten this out productively. But you need to learn to respect my judgement. It is me who chooses how to live my life. It's me that will live with the consequences of my actions and who will be happy in my own way. It's my life."

After that, let the other person talk, but don't let them start with the "You're making a bad decision" thing. You're an adult. They have a right to a different view and to draw your attention to details you might have overlooked, but you have a right to your autonomy. And ultimately, it's up to your family to learn to love the person you really are, not the person they'd want you to be.

Be courageous. If you play this type of situation right, you can take a big step into adulthood. You can learn to be more able and fit to stand on your own feet in the future. No one can drag a person down once she's anchored by faith in her power of decision.

See this occaision as challenge an opportunity to acquire strength.

Go out an act according to your desires, dreams and capacities. Other people's support is important, but you're the one living your life. Also, consider that true healthy relationships are balanced with advice and the support of autonomy. Someone trying to bully you into submission over anything is not a great situation to remain in. If, after repeated attempts to curtail emotional bullying you don't succeed to contain it, you might want to take a look at the closeness you accord this particular relationship.

No reason to masochistically open up your jaw for a punch. Of course, we need to learn to be vulnerable time to time, but the intimacy of exposing vulnerablility is a privilege in a friendship. Someone who abuses the trust required to share insecurities perhaps isn't worthy of that trust.

Also, you might want to check your own need for approval. If you find yourself constantly requiring validation that your choices are the right ones, you might be lacking conviction of your own. Requiring validation, of course, opens you up for abuse, should you surround yourself with the wrong people.

Gracious Ways to Manage a Wedding "B" List

It is a fact of life: when you are planning a wedding, you can rarely invite everyone that you would like to. Either the budget is too small, the venue is too tight, or your family is just too big. One way that some couples handle this dilemma is by grouping their wedding guest lists into "A"s and "B"s.

In a nutshell, the "A" list is the group of people that you will definitely be inviting to your wedding. This group usually includes your immediate family, attendants, close friends, and the random people that your parents insist on inviting to your wedding because they are paying for it. The "B" list will typically be people that you would like to have, space permitting. "B" lists are generally populated by people such as more recently acquired friends, old college chums you haven't seen in a while, and your co-workers.

The way to create the "A" list is to add up everyone that you must have at your wedding, and then keep going with names from your extended circle until you have hit the limit of either your venue or budget. Do this as if every single person on the list will actually be coming (which of course, they won't). In other words, if your venue can only seat 110 people, then your list should have exactly 110 names on it - and don't forget to include the bride and groom in this head count! You know have your "A" list.

Anyone who did not make the initial cut is now officially on your "B" list. Okay, so far, so good. As the R.s.v.p.s start to roll in from the first set of invitations, you can invite one person from the "B" list for each declined invitation. From here on in, things can get a little trickier. The wedding invitations need to be sent out to the "A" list well in advance of your wedding date, usually at least 8 weeks, but sometimes even more. Where it gets dicey is that you have to finagle responses from all of the guests on your "A" list much earlier than usual - four weeks before the wedding at the minimum. If people ask why you need to have your answers so early, blame the caterer; whatever you do, never let on that you have a "B" list waiting in the wings.

Let me repeat: no one should know about the "B" list (though some may suspect, based on the timing of the invitations). It is not improper or poor etiquette to have an "A" list and a "B" list, however it would be terrible if any of the "B" listers were made to feel like they were your second choice guests. This means that when you are sending out the invitations, you must do so based in part on the social and familial circles of your invitees. You can't invite your friend Sally eight weeks before the wedding, but send out a last minute invite to her sister Margaret. If people are going to talk, put them both on either the "A" or "B" list together to avoid hurt feelings.

Some people find the idea of two separate guest lists to be highly offensive. If you feel this way, then there are a few other paths that you can take. One of the nicest things that a couple can do is to scale back on the luxury of the wedding to be able to include everyone who is near and dear to them. Maybe you have to have your reception in a mid-range hotel instead of a ritzy private club, but in the end, you may find that who you have at your wedding is more important than where you have it.

Other couples will find other cost-cutting solutions to be able to expand their guest list. For instance, you can have a brunch instead of a sit-down evening reception. Another way to cut expenses is to order your bridesmaid jewelry sets online. Your wedding is a time to be yourself, yes, but the best version of yourself. When people reflect back on your wedding day, you want them to remark about how lovely and gracious the bride was, not about how drunk she got. Your wedding is not a day to cut completely loose; it is better to keep your celebration within the bounds of good taste. With all eyes looking that way, you will want to be sure that the altar is as beautifully decorated as the rest of your wedding. Here are some of the ways that you can make the altar picture perfect for your wedding ceremony.

The first step when planning any type of church decorations is to speak to your officiant. Most churches will have regulations about what they will or will not permit you to do to the church, both inside and outside. You are likely to find that they do not want you to put any holes in the wall, and sprinkling the altar floor with flower petals is also probably not allowed. From there, some churches will allow you a great deal of flexibility, whereas others may permit only a bare minimum of decorating.

If your wedding will fall near a holiday like Christmas or Easter, also be sure to find out what special decorations the church will have in place at that time. It may be that they are so lovely that you do not need to add anything else. In fact, this can be a very good reason to schedule your wedding at one of these times, as you can usually cut down on your decorating costs. It is also quite possible that the seasonal flowers and the like will have to remain in place during your wedding, so you will need to choose your other décor to coordinate.

The altar area of a church is a large space to fill, so it is important to choose flowers and other elements that make a big impact. Remember that your guests will be seeing the decorations from distance. If your church allows it, a gorgeous idea is to drape a lush swag of greens and flowers on the altar table. This will look very pretty in the photographs behind you taken during the exchange of vows.

Most altars are too large an area to fill with decorations, so don't drive yourself crazy trying to decorate every square inch. Simply choose a few large accents and position them where they will have the most impact. The special décor that you use for your wedding ceremony will make it even lovelier.

When planning a wedding on a budget you have to lower your requirements just a bit. For example, you can't try to have to filet mignon if you are throwing the wedding on a fish stick budget. I have broken down the various aspects of the wedding planning to the last details so that you will get a better idea of what I mean.

Ideally, you would want to have at least a year to plan the wedding, but that is not always possible or desired. For the purposes of this guide, I have set up a 12 month wedding timeline that will certainly make it a little bit easier to host your wedding.

12 months before your Wedding day- Announce the engagement
- Set your wedding date
- Create a budget
- Hire a Wedding Coordinator (optional)
- Create your guest list
- Start brainstorming ideas and themes
- Reserve your Ceremony spot
- Book an Officiate
- Make reservations for your Reception area
- Book a Photographer and Videographer
- Book Caterer, Florist and Music (Band, DJ, etc.)
- Look for a Wedding gown and Tux, allowing time for alterations and fittings
- Register for gifts
- Select and call the bridesmaids and groomsmen.

To plan for your reception meal for a wedding on a budget, try to keep your guest list to a reasonable number. You'll need to keep this optimal number (assuming that EVERYONE you invite will be in attendance) in mind as you look for a venue for the food for your wedding reception meal. Make sure you have a definite attended count at least 2 weeks before the reception so you can negotiate price if you have less attending than you thought.

First, shop around to see what kinds of services are offered based on the type of place you choose to hold your reception. Halls which offer individual service by a wait staff will always prove to be higher in cost than a family-style buffet line offered by other venues. The additional money goes to pay the salaries of anyone else who is necessary to provide service.

There is the possibility that the cost of less expensive food includes the pay for a few people who will stand with the food offered on the buffet line and serve it as your guests go by with plates in hand to get their meals. In some rare instances, the only server who will actually stand with the food will be someone who will dispense measured portions of whatever meat may be offered to insure that everyone there gets a serving.

Get an estimation of what the cost would be per person, depending on what fare is offered. Be aware that the more exotic the fare, the higher the cost will be, especially if there is a choice of two or three meats offered. At a family-style affair, you are likely to get one meat choice, some sort of starch, either in the form of a pasta dish or mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls or other bread, green salad with a simple dressing, and a choice of water, coffee or tea to drink. In some instances, the pasta dish (usually shells or ziti with some sort of marinara sauce) will contain meat as a component.

Dessert will more than likely be the wedding cake, although in some instances ice cream or sorbet can be included. If an alcoholic beverage like champagne for toasts allowed and offered, there is the possibility that it will have to be provided by the bridal party.

Some venues not only allow alcoholic beverages, but will offer bartending services. In this case, you need to try and determine whether it is worth the expense to offer open bar services (usually including some sort of soft drinks for non-drinkers) or whether you should make it the type of service where guests have to pay for any drink they want. Be aware that open bars can run upwards of $500 and could go as high as $2500 depending on the number of guests you expect to have served.

As a final tip for your wedding reception meal for a wedding on a budget, consider having finger foods, especially if your wedding is scheduled for the morning or early afternoon. The choice of small sandwiches and items like cookies or pastries is a much lighter fare that will sit better, especially if guests have already had breakfast or lunch.

This sort of item will cost far less than a traditional reception sit-down meal. You may also find that if you have family or friends can help provide the lighter foods, you will need minimal staff at the hall. In this instance you can also serve the wedding cake at the end, and can bring in a punch or other assorted beverages (be they alcoholic or non-alcoholic) that can go in and on paper dishes and cups that you provide.

Q~ Can I have flower girls in lieu of bridesmaids?

A~ How darling! In Victorian England, having child attendants was all the rage, and it's still a popular British custom. Your only problem? Making sure that the women (or men) close to you are still on board to help out with pre-wedding tasks, throwing a shower, and much more. Even the cutest flower girls in the world can't provide you with the help you'll need for this event. So if you go the flower girl route, make sure to publicly thank the fairy godmothers who help to make your wedding happen (in the program or at the reception) and throw in a nice gift, too.

Q~ My daughter is a flower girl in my sister's wedding. We've had conversations about her attire, but it's unclear who's paying. I want her to look picture perfect, too, but what's the deal?

A ~Usually, child attendants' parents pay for their clothes, but the bride and groom will sometimes purchase a flower girl's dress (or a ring bearer's adorable little suit) as a gift. Ask your sister in plain terms, so that there are no misunderstandings. If they're receptive, maybe you can split it, or, you pay for dress, they pay for accessories and shoes. Just keep in mind that, like bridesmaids and groomsmen, agreeing to be in the wedding generally means you're willing to purchase an outfit. So, we say go for a multi-purpose gown (the wedding, birthday parties, holidays, etc.). Paying for your childs outfit is not in lieu of a wedding gift(s). So isn't it great our dresses are so inexpensive?

Q~ There's some concern about inviting our 6-year-old flower girl (a niece) and 4-year-old ring bearer (a nephew) to the rehearsal dinner, especially since the reservation is for 8pm. My fiance's mother does not want to invite them to the dinner because they are so young; my parents disagree -- they are part of the wedding party. I can understand both points of view, but I don't know what we would do with them after the rehearsal. Who makes the call? The host (my fiance's mom) or the couple?

A~ There's no strict etiquette -- whether or not child attendants are invited to the rehearsal dinner is up to you ("you" meaning the couple and the hosts of the party, often the groom's parents). It is appropriate to invite her to the dinner, since she will be at the rehearsal and they are part of the wedding party -- especially if their parents will be there, too! Perhaps you and your fiance should try to talk about this issue with his mom to see if you can change her mind. It might be a something very logical. Is your wedding the next day? If so, let the poor child sleep! You will be sorry if you don't! Check in with the parents, too. Maybe they already have a plan (i.e., a babysitter is coming to pick them up at 9:30).

Q~ I'm a bridesmaid, and the bride's having her baby sister as the flower girl. I mean, she's cute, but I really don't want to have to be in charge of policing a 4-year-old's every move. Is "babysitting" her one of my duties?

A~Yes and no. For the day of the wedding, the bride may ask you to check her sister's appearance before she goes down the aisle, smooth her dress, fix her hair wreath, etc. You might also have to take her to the restroom a couple of times. You can handle this, we know you can! As for the reception, we think you're off the hook. Parents will probably take charge, anyway. When it comes to the party, you should be free to run with an older crowd. But, ask what the expectations of the bride are first. But, yes during the ceremony, if you've been asked, you must be someone the bride trusts, so be honored!

Q~ Does the flower girl or ring bearer stand in the receiving line?

A~ Not usually, but if she's daughter or son to one of the newlyweds, then they should definitely be included. This is a big day for them, too. Don't forget her/him.

Q~ I'm one of 6 bridesmaids, and I was wondering what the seating at the head table should be. In addition to the 12 attendants (6 guys for the 6 girls), there are two 5-year-old flower girls. Is it proper for the girls to sit with us or should be directed to sit with their parents?

A~ It's not up to anyone in the the wedding party to decide where anyone's going to sit at the reception -- only the bride and groom can say that. And it really would go back to what they gave the caterer or event planner for seating arrangements. Still, the young children in the wedding party (under 12) generally sit with their parents at the reception. Its only fair because the parents are the ones who know what they will and will not eat.

Are the flower girls or ring bearers daughters or sons to the bride or groom? If that's the case, then you should count on sharing table space with their little ones and helping out as much as you can! Remember, this is only one day, try to help make it as smooth as possible.

Catholics often place a lot of importance in the marriage of a couple. If you have a hard time getting hold of them, you don’t seem to understand each other or they don’t speak your language, get someone else. Plenty of great wedding vendors want your business and you should be patient enough to find that perfect fit like you found your perfect mate.

4. Isn’t willing to meet in person

If a wedding vendor isn’t willing to meet in person it can mean a few things. One, their business doesn’t exist; two, they only want your money; three, they are so booked with weddings that they can’t concentrate enough on any single one. Find a vendor who has time for you and understands the importance of meeting in person.

5. Too inexpensive

A wedding vendor that is too inexpensive can be more poisonous to your wedding than if a wedding vendor doesn’t show up at all. This is because, usually wedding vendors who charge little show up but perform poorly or get your instructions wrong. Look for the good deal, but be careful.

These bad vendor signs are just a few out of dozens to watch for. Other signs to look for include: The vendor won’t give referrals, he or she treats you poorly, he or she has a shady location with a P.O. Box, or you start seeing hidden fees.

Whether you choose a romantic castle in the Highlands of Scotland, a magnificent stately home or something more modest, remember stick to your budget and don’t be tempted to overspend.

Of course you and you future spouse may just decide to go abroad either alone or with a few friends and family and get married on a beach, up a mountain of even Las Vegas in Elvis Presley style. Tour operators will be very helpful in providing you with the correct advice and information about getting married abroad.

When choosing your exotic destination remember that some of the destinations we normally associate with glorious sunshine and beautiful beaches and scenery may have seasons where the weather may not be so predictable or kind. Beware of monsoon and hurricane seasons in particular.

Organising a wedding can be a very stressful affair but there are usually plenty of people that will be willing to help such as friends and family as well as wedding organisers if you want to leave everything to a professional. The First thing you might want to ask is: "Why would I ever want to try and clean my own wedding gown?" You probably noticed that the wear tag says "Dry Clean Only". So if you're thinking of doing your own cleaning, isn't that taking an awfully big risk.? Do you want to take the chance of damaging or destroying your cherished gown?

Probably the number one reason of trying to clean your own wedding gown would be to save money. Everyone wants to save money....so let's examine this situation a little further.

Read your fabric labels carefully. If your wedding dress is silk or a silk blend then don't attempt to clean it yourself. If your gown and the lining are polyester then it is actually possible to do your own gown cleaning.

But before you start the process you should also consider: Does the dress have beads on it? Are they sewn on or glued on? Does the dress have sequins? Are they sewn or glued on? You would need to be extra careful if the wedding gown is beaded or with sequins.

Ok, you still want to proceed!

Take special care around the hem of the gown. You'll need to use a detergent mix, or even "oxiclean" made into a paste. Gently scrub the dirty hem. Pay special attention also to the neckline and "arm pits" of the wedding gown. These areas also become more soiled than other areas.

Examine the gown carefully for any other spots. Some wines will not leave a stain but should be scrubbed as well. Cake, food or natural oils from your hands can also leave areas that need attention.

If you are going to use a washing machine instead of hand washing, turn the wedding dress inside out before placing in the washer.

If you have a large capacity front loading washer then place the wedding gown inside and wash on the gentle cycle.

If you have a top load waster be extra careful. The washing action tends to twist your gown up considerably.

Something else to consider before you start this whole process: are you going to try and press the gown yourself or have it professionally steamed/pressed after you clean it. Hand pressing with an iron is tedious and can damage - even scorch the fabric and it can melt the sequins.

If you are going to have your wedding dress professionally steamed/pressed check before hand to see what they will charge. Sometimes your local dry cleaner will charge nearly as much for steaming and pressing as they do for their whole service. To actually save money, time and stress you should consider having your wedding gown professionally cleaned and preserved.

Several companies provide a complete kit to make it easy for you. The wedding gown preservation kit will contain everything you need. It will contain a shipping bag and box, a customer invoice, sealing tape and complete instructions. You'll need to place your dress in the plastic bag, the invoice in the bag, the dress/invoice/bag into the box. Seal up the box with the sealing tape provided and place the pre-paid shipping label on the box. Everything is pre-paid so all you need to do is take the completed package to any UPS/Fed Ex. Store.

What to Do When the Family Bullies

I just recently had a friend ask me how to handle the fact that her family was trying to emotionally sabotage her up-coming marriage. They didn't approve of her partner. This is an amazingly common issue. Most people have at some point faced parents being damagingly judgmental about a choice of partner. But what a disaster when this takes places around the time you're looking to say "I do"!

I've heard all sorts of variants on this theme. "I hate what I'm studying, but my parents say I should finish my degree." or "I work as an X, not because that's what I wanted, but because my family pushed me in that direction."

The truth is, families can be great supporters sometimes. They can guide us, shelter us, and nurture us when we're hurting. But - and it's a big but - families can also be very destructive if they aren't autonomy supporting, especially once the kids have grown up.

The process starts this way. As children, we learn to look to our parents and siblings to give us hints to where there may be danger. Remember when you were a terrified kid in a scary movie and your Dad put his arm around you and said everything'll be ok? Or, on the other hand, when you were doing something dangerous and didn't realise it? Your Mom swooped in and stopped you before disaster hit.

Basically, in times of stress or uncertainty you got used to looking to your parents for advice, AND THEY GOT USED TO GUIDING YOU and having the power to stop or encourage you.

Well, both parents and kids get confused in later life. Not only is it a huge step for a young adult to "take control of their lives" and go against family wisdom, be it with a choice of partners, career or lifestyle. But parents also have trouble. Because they're trying to prevent their kids from making what they see as a mistake, they can bully, become beligerent and come out with great little kernels like: "You're throwing your life away."

The key to dealing with reactions like this is twofold. The first aspect is to isolate yourself, if only for a few days. Go to someone's cottage. Take a road trip. Stay with a friend in another city.

And now, you want to do this without whoever's been pressuring you, like your parents or even an interfering friend and/or partner.

In this time, you need to square stuff with yourself. Why do you want to make a change? Are you sure of your choice? Are your motives the rights ones?
If the answers to all these questions are "Yes". Then you've got half your answer. You know in your heart what is right for you.

Why do I recommend this check-in with yourself?

Because, rebellious little teenagers that we are, even as adults, often we do things in "reaction" to those around us. For example, "You don't think I should be with this guy? Ok, I'm going to buy a ring." or "You don't think I should move just now? Well I'll call the realtor tommorrow morning!"

For this reason, it's very important to get straight in your head what decisions are yours and what you've done in reaction to other people's (overbearing) opinions.

In the case of a family sabotaging an up-coming marriage, I'd ask myself: "Why do I want to get married at a time when my family has little confidence. If these memories will last a lifetime, wouldn't I rather they be as perfect as possible? And if money is an issue, why not save for 6 months?"

Once you've got this straight, it's time to take on your family. Sit down the contrary members one by one and start with something like:

"I know you don't think what I'm doing is a good idea, but I'm an adult and I've made a choice. There's nothing you can do to change my mind. Actually, now, you're in the process of ruining our relationship by trying to undermine my autonomy and self-esteem. I value our relationship and so want us to straighten this out productively. But you need to learn to respect my judgement. It is me who chooses how to live my life. It's me that will live with the consequences of my actions and who will be happy in my own way. It's my life."

After that, let the other person talk, but don't let them start with the "You're making a bad decision" thing. You're an adult. They have a right to a different view and to draw your attention to details you might have overlooked, but you have a right to your autonomy. And ultimately, it's up to your family to learn to love the person you really are, not the person they'd want you to be.

Be courageous. If you play this type of situation right, you can take a big step into adulthood. You can learn to be more able and fit to stand on your own feet in the future. No one can drag a person down once she's anchored by faith in her power of decision.

See this occaision as challenge an opportunity to acquire strength.

Go out an act according to your desires, dreams and capacities. Other people's support is important, but you're the one living your life. Also, consider that true healthy relationships are balanced with advice and the support of autonomy. Someone trying to bully you into submission over anything is not a great situation to remain in. If, after repeated attempts to curtail emotional bullying you don't succeed to contain it, you might want to take a look at the closeness you accord this particular relationship.

No reason to masochistically open up your jaw for a punch. Of course, we need to learn to be vulnerable time to time, but the intimacy of exposing vulnerablility is a privilege in a friendship. Someone who abuses the trust required to share insecurities perhaps isn't worthy of that trust.

Also, you might want to check your own need for approval. If you find yourself constantly requiring validation that your choices are the right ones, you might be lacking conviction of your own. Requiring validation, of course, opens you up for abuse, should you surround yourself with the wrong people.
